Which Project to Choose?

When choosing a project with Frontier, it's important that you think carefully about what type of project will best match the type of experience you're seeking and how you'd prefer your contribution to be spent.

Where shall I go?

We have projects in over 50 countries in 5 continents, so you're not short on options! You may already have an idea of where you want to go, but here's a few tips to help you decide...

Do your research

You need to make sure you are completely happy with the country you'll be visiting; from the culture to the climate, the proximity to big cities and even the distance from friends and family are all deciding factors! We try to give you as much information about the countries and projects as possible, but always recommend your doing a bit of research of your own.

Bury yourself in a book

The travel sections of bookshops hold a wealth of information about all the countries and major cities of the world. If you've got some idea of where you want to go, read up on the area and make sure that you know what to expect.

Talk to people

Chat to friends and family who have been to the country you're thinking of visiting. Talk to your teachers or lecturers. You can even ask our resident travel experts on +44 207 613 2422!

Surf the internet

There are lots of other sources of useful information. Take a look at Frontier's country guides, consult our Gap Year Advice website and look at the FCO travel advice website. A Google search will throw up other useful information sites and travel blogs.

What shall I do?

There are many different projects available, all offering challenges of different types, physical, mental or a combination. You'll get the most rewarding experience if you are ready to embrace these challenges before you leave, so think carefully about what's right for you.

Are you an animal lover, a sports fanatic or an intrepid trekker or explorer?

Do you love kids, and are you thinking about a career in teaching?

Would you like to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in to an infrastructure or construction project for a local community?

Or would you prefer to mix some travelling with a volunteer experience?

It may be that you want to try something new. Whatever you decide upon, you need to be sure that it's something you can commit to heart and soul, because that's the way you'll get the most out of it.

Which type of project shall I do?

Do you fancy:

  • A beach camp or wilderness camp in a remote environment?
  • Working with a team of volunteers just like you?
  • Doing groundbreaking conservation research?
  • Working alongside a dedicated team of young staff who are on hand to help 24-hours a day?

then the Frontier Group projects are for you!

On the other hand, would you like:

  • Complete immersion in local culture?
  • Trying authentic local dishes?
  • Exploring brand new cities and sights?
  • Working by yourself, with the community around you?

then you'll definitely enjoy our Frontier Partner projects.

Am I prepared?

The most important thing to ensure when choosing your gap year activity and destination experience is that you will be sufficiently prepared. The better prepared you are when you travel abroad, the safer you'll be and the more rewarding and memorable the experience. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office offers Know before You Go travel advice, including simple precautions you can take before and during your trip. Consulting our Gap Year Advice website will also be useful.

Last but not least!

This information is designed to give you ideas and inspiration for your project abroad with Frontier. It's intended as a guide only and although details are correct at time of publishing, all projects are subject to change, which can occur at the last minute and without notice.

Just remember...

Part of the excitement of a gap year experience is the unpredictability of life in a remote location and the thrill of the unknown;

  • Changing weather conditions may mean you need to relocate in order to avoid floods or cyclones!
  • Seasonal variations in wildlife populations may affect what animals and plants you are likely to encounter.
  • The immediate needs of a local community may affect what types of community development work is the priority.
  • Term times, local festivals, and holidays will affect the number of children in schools.
  • Accommodation arrangements may vary depending on availability.

Remember to check our website regularly to find the most up-to-date project information and perhaps even discover a new project you haven't considered before.

Can't decide?

If you can't make up your mind, our expert travel advisers are more than happy to help – you can even fill out an enquiry form or request a call back so you don't even have to pay for the phone call! Call us and we will guide you through our travel questionnaire and help you find your ideal project.

As the time of your project approaches, we'll tell you about any alterations to your activities so you'll be well prepared for your adventure. Don't forget, whilst on your project you're there to provide help and skills wherever they are needed most, rather than to impose what you want to do upon the local people. With this in mind, you can be sure to have a rewarding gap experience and be confident that all your efforts really have made a difference.
