BTEC Advanced Certificate in Expedition Management

BTEC Advanced Certificate in Expedition Management

The BTEC Advanced Certificate in Expedition Management (Biodiversity Research) builds expedition planning, survival, navigation, logistics, and leadership skills in participants. You'll trek through a beautiful but remote region, carrying all of your expedition equipment along the way and helping your team to survive in a tough environment. Under the supervision of an experienced expedition leader you'll take turns running the expedition, with responsibility for finding a route, procuring supplies, and ensuring the safety and comfort of your team-mates. If you want to push your limits of endurance and strength while exploring an exciting, untouched environment then this is the expedition for you! Continual assessment is used, together with an expedition planning document, an expedition log and a written report. The planning document is prepared before departure, and the written report is completed on your return, but all other elements are completed in the field.

This qualification is available for volunteer Expedition Trainees on the 4 week Expedition Management programme. The syllabus comprises of 170 guided learning hours and the Advanced BTEC Certificate is a level 3 qualification, the same level as an A-Level.

This qualification covers 4 units:

  1. Expedition planning
  2. Expedition skills
  3. Team leadership
  4. Rapid biodiversity assessment

What extra work will I do on the project to gain a BTEC certificate?

Your BTEC qualification will be assessed by your expedition leader in the field. Assessments include a planning document, log-book, a verbal presentation and an expedition report. Full training on what to expect and a student handbook will be provided by Frontier staff prior to the project. This is distributed at the Expedition Management weekend which we strongly recommend you attend (though there is provision for those candidates who are not able to do so).

Did you say a written report?

A written report completed by you is required to demonstrate that you can produce a record of the planning process and a reference for use during the expedition. This document will be approximately 6 to 10 sides of A4 and you'll have 6 weeks to complete it and hand it in to the London HQ following the last day of your expedition. Reports handed in after this date will not qualify for marking.

How difficult is a BTEC Advanced Certificate to pass?

The basis of a BTEC qualification is to demonstrate competence. Our staff have been trained to think laterally to identify how you are competent at a task – we want you to succeed! However you will need to successfully complete the assessments, including the log-book and verbal presentation.
