There are very few recognised charity homes for neglected children in Ghana and these intelligent children miss out on the opportunity to attend school and develop their education. Volunteer teachers and carers are vital to ensure these children can build a future for themselves. Although English is the national language of Ghana, many Ghanaian children grow up speaking the local tribal languages of their families, such as Ga, Twi and Ewe. However, to communicate with fellow Ghanaians in education, business, and all official areas of life they must have a good command of English. Knowledge of English is therefore essential. You could dance, sing and play games with the children, as well as teach them English. Literacy is key to education and future jobs for poor children, enabling them to move beyond subsistence farming. Illiterate children have few educational options, and your presence in the school gives them the gift of the language of commerce, allowing them to access stable and secure jobs and high school and college scholarships. Many centres in Ghana rely entirely on volunteer support in order to remain operational and your work will be invaluable in maintaining the ongoing educational opportunities of the local people. You can also help support and educate the local community in much needed areas where a lack of knowledge in malaria, family planning and other health issues presents a very real problem. The time you put in to working with the community is greatly appreciated and hugely beneficial.

The Ghana Children, Teaching and Community Health project is a fantastic opportunity for caring volunteers to make a great impact on the local community and really integrate themselves within Ghanaian culture. Volunteers should be ready and willing to get stuck in to the varied work; a flexible and positive approach is essential! Whichever projects you take part in you can be sure that the children and people you help will be extremely grateful for having someone there to support and care about them. Your work programme will usually run five days a week, mornings and afternoons, with evenings free to enjoy as you wish. Volunteers will have the opportunity to help in various areas within the local communities, depending on current need at the time of your project. Areas of work may include the following.

Working with children

Volunteers may help with caring for and teaching children living at the Centre, as well as others from the village who may visit for classes. Volunteers are instrumental in keeping the children engaged with games after school hours and helping with cooking and cleaning in the centre .

Volunteers may work in basic community schools, day care centres and the special school for the deaf, helping out in the classroom and with any other aspects of school life. Please note that school and public holidays may affect the schedule so please check for the time of year in which you are taking part.

Community health

Volunteers may help in assisting people with disabilities, working around the hospital, patient and customer care, malaria and the need to keep our environments clean to avoid disease, or even administration - basically a variety of different aspects required to keep the hospital or health centres running.

You will be collected from Accra airport by a local staff member, but please aim to arrive before 8pm, as we prefer not to have volunteers travelling at night time. You will be taken straight to your homestay accommodation, where you will receive introductions and briefing on your project.

You will be offered accommodation with a welcoming Ghanaian host in a comfortable house attached to the community school in which the project runs. You will be provided with a bed and bedding and there are Western style toilets and basic facilities.

During your stay you will enjoy two tasty meals a day, sampling national dishes such as fufu, a delicious treat of mashed yams, rice or corn. Try this with the thick soup which is a national staple and you will experience a truly authentic snapshot of life in Ghana. Vegetarians are welcome and can be catered for.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
