Senegal is a multifaceted and vibrant country, famous for its art heritage and a rich tapestry of interwoven musical roots. Despite its diminutive size, Senegal has its own unique amalgamation of exotic music, tempting cuisine and unusual customs, making it a veritable melting pot of cultural discovery. Visit a pristine ivory coast line laced with the dramatic expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, where you will find beaches scattered with rose tinged shells, palm trees flourishing on the sandy shores and coral reefs alive with a myriad of species of tiny, colourful fish and other tropical creatures unique to these waters.

Enjoy dark humid nights in the thriving port of Dakar, where you will find a range of influences from French to Arabic expressed in a multitude of boutique cafés, bars and restaurants as well as informative galleries and museums.

Make the most of your time in this incredible country with the Senegal experience! This programme will help you integrate and make friends with the local community with an initial week of intensive one to one French classes, followed by a week either of music and cultural classes working with local artists or volunteering at the local radio and television centre!

This project offers you a chance to get to know this beautiful area of Western Africa in an intimate way. Submerge yourself in Senegalese culture and traditions as you improve your linguistic skills, develop new skills and gain fantastic media journalism experience in this unique and exciting location.

Week 1

You will begin your Senegal experience with a week of French lessons; you will have three hours of private lessons per day Monday-Friday from a qualified teacher who will keep on track of your progress through a variety of class activities. By staying with a host family you will get the opportunity to practise your French skills in everyday conversation, encouraging you to develop your level of fluency and make the most out of this once in a life time opportunity. Following the completion of week one, you will then have the opportunity to choose from one of the following programmes:

Week 2 Option 1 – Music and Cultural Classes

If you choose this option you will participate in cultural classes, where you will be taught how to play various African instruments such as the Djembé, the Sabaar and the Tama as well as traditional dances including the national Senegalese dance, the Mbalax. You will also have the opportunity to join lively dance excursions to the beach, which can be arranged to show off your new skills on the golden sands of this African treasure land.

Week 2 Option 2 – Media Placement (intermediate French required)

If music and dancing is not your thing, why not round off your experience by working alongside local professionals and volunteering at the local radio or television centre. You will have the opportunity to discover more about the local cultures and learn more about this fantastic country. As part of your work you will be conducting interviews, writing articles or making programmes in English and will be encouraged to bring your own creativity and perspectives whilst you learn from the professionals working alongside you. Working in a Senegalese radio station could prove to be a valuable experience for your future career as well as creating memories that will last forever. Given the importance of the role that you will play in the team, a fairly high level of French is required to join this programme.

You will be met upon arrival at Dakar Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport by our friendly coordinator and taken to your accommodation, where you will be able to relax and rest before starting on this fantastic placement.

Depending upon the time of your arrival, you will either be taken to a local hotel (if you arrive late at night) or directly to your welcoming homestay family in Dakar, where you will be board for the remainder of your stay. You will be given your own private room which may be shared with one other volunteer and your homestay will be based within a 30 minute walk of your work placement. The accommodation will of course be clean and comfortable with all the basic amenities and your host family will be more than happy to help you with your French and Wolof and other local information to help you settle in.

During your stay you will enjoy three meals a day, which you will usually be shared with your host family. Dishes that you may encounter include tasty stuffed avocados and barbecued chicken in a delicious rich onion and lemon sauce. Look out for the popular chopped egg salad amongst other tasty treats. Those with a sweet tooth may like to try peanut ice cream! Senegal favourites are often simple home-cooked dishes made with fresh produce.

In Senegal, the traditional way to eat is from a huge bowl placed in the centre of the floor. The whole family sits and eats together using only the right hand. This is an integral part of Senegalese culture, however if you prefer, your host family will happily provide you with your own plate.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
