French is the 10th most spoken language in the world and is often referred to as one of the most romantic spoken languages. It is spoken in a vast number of countries including Belgium, Switzerland and Canada and is regarded as one of the most important diplomatic languages, spoken by members of NATO, the International Court of Justice and the World Trade Organisation to name but a few. This project will enhance your language skills, integrating you within a fast paced environment whereby your ability to communicate in French will progress at an impressive rate.  Whether you want to improve your career prospects or make travel easier then Frontier's French language immersion programme is right for you.

Your typical routine will involve lessons commencing from 9am till 12pm, allowing you to have afternoons and weekends free to explore! The teaching staff within the school will be highly qualified native speakers, ensuring that you are receiving the highest quality of tutoring. If you are a beginner, being taught by an experienced teacher will give you an excellent introduction to this elegant language, picking up on colloquialisms whilst mastering your pronunciation. In class exercises, reading, writing, and grammar will all be covered, ensuring that you grasp the fundamentals before moving on to more complex constructions and subjects as your confidence builds.

Out of the classroom you will be able to put your French speaking into practice, exploring this culturally diverse city and conversing with the welcoming locals. In addition to your own exploring, you may have the opportunity to take part in cultural activities such as museum visits, city centre tours, markets and vineyards tours twice a month.

You can reach the city of Lyon by flying into Lyon Saint Exupery or by train into Gare de la Part-Dieu or one of Lyon’s other train stations. From here you will be able to transfer by taxi or public transport to your accommodation.

The language school offers a pick-up service from Lyon Saint Exupery airport for an additional €100 or from a Lyon train station for €50. They are more than happy to organise the drop off at the airport or train station at the end of your programme for the same prices.

During your course you will be staying in homestay accommodation with a recommended local family. You will have your own room, access to the kitchen, bathroom, WC, Wi-Fi and will be provided with two meals a day. This is a great way for you to immerse yourself into the culture and lifestyle of a typical French family.

There is also the option to upgrade your accommodation to the student accommodation where you would have your own room with either a private or a shared bathroom. Laundry facilities would be available to you and you would have full use of a kitchen. If you would like to upgrade, please speak to one of the volunteer advisors about this.

If you choose the homestay accommodation you will have breakfast and dinner included. This half board option allows you to practice French during dinner and also allows you to discover more of the French culture within a family setting.

If you do choose to head out and experience all of the culinary delights, the city of Lyon has a lot to offer. This gives you a great opportunity to practice your newly acquired French vocabulary with the locals. French cuisine is world famous, with cutting edge chefs leading the world’s Michelin star establishments and with over a thousand different eateries in Lyon you will be spoilt for choice! Local cuisine is rich and relies on a wealth of fabulous local ingredients such and a wide variety of meats, fruits, herbs, and vegetables from the surrounding area.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
